FAQS

  • Sewing

The sewing machines are available to use at no cost. Users should provide their own fabric and notions. Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart are nearby stores that carry fabric. Some free scrap fabric and notions are available in the marked bin in the Maker’s Space. Pins, needles, etc. are available for use, but these should not leave the Maker’s Space. A basic supply of thread is also available.

    Embroidery

Experienced users may use the single-needle embroidery machine at no cost. Embroidery thread and stabilizer are also available for your use. If you are planning to complete a large quantity (15+) of projects, please send us an e-mail for approval before beginning. If you wish to have a HubTech complete an embroidery project for you, please refer to the question regarding placing orders.

  • Sewing Machines - All students, faculty, and staff of Union University are welcome to use the sewing machines. If you have never used a sewing machine before, please attend a workshop or see a HubTech for assistance.

Single-Needle Embroidery Machine - The single-needle embroidery machine should only be used under the supervision of a HubTech or Hub faculty member.

Multi-Needle Embroidery Machine - The 6-needle embroidery machine should only be operated by a trained HubTech. Please talk to a HubTech or Hub faculty member if you have a project requiring this machine.

  • We have irons, ironing boards, pins, needles, scissors, a rotary cutter, cutting mats, rulers, a basic selection of thread, and more.

For embroidery, we also have cut-away and tear-away stabilizer and embroidery thread.

Please let us know of any items that you think would be helpful that we do not yet have.

  • It’s a great time to learn! Please look for an upcoming workshop.

  • Our HubTechs can complete embroidery projects for others (time permitting). Please refer to our Student Price List or Faculty/Staff Price List for pricing details.

    • While we do our best to ensure the quality of our work, our HubTechs are not professionals and there is a chance that an item you bring to us for embroidery may be damaged. Please do not bring items that are costly or irreplaceable.

If you would like to request some embroidery, please fill out the Project Request Form.

  • Union students, faculty, and staff who are starting or running a small business are welcome to use the Hub for prototyping designs. For these prototypes, the same costs and fees apply as for classroom or personal use of Hub supplies and equipment. See our Equipment Policies.

If your project moves beyond prototyping and you begin producing items for sale, please contact us and we will let you know how to become part of our Entrepreneurship program.

At this time, the Hub is not available for use by businesses unaffiliated with Union to produce merchandise for sale.
